Pilot Training

Thursday January 31st, 2013
Pilot Leadership Training was held at Truman on January 31st.
Students took part in and helped facilitate numerous activities, lessons and discussions that they will be able to lead in their Flyertimes.

What is a Pilot?
Pilots represent their Flyertime Groups in student-led Flyertime activities which will foster a safe and positive culture at Truman Middle School. Responsibilities of a Pilot include leading several activities and discussions in their Flyertimes. In addition, Pilots will be called back to Pilot Planning periodically during Flyertime to express the needs and ideas of their respective Flyertimes. A strong desire to lead others in creating a great TMS are the outstanding qualities seen in these pilots. Our Pilots' commitment to help our Truman Middle School Community is vital and very much appreciated
Staff members presenting the training:  Dr. Sparks, Mr. Straatmann, Mrs. Richards, Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Pulliam, Mr. Jansen, Mrs. Lages, and Mrs. Siebert

Looking Ahead

8th grade students met with Dr. Riethmeier, who will be their 9th grade counselor, to discuss the first step in preparing for high school.
On January 30th parents of 8th graders can meet in the High School auditorium form 6-7 pm for a parent meeting which will be followed by Curriculum Night. The purpose of Curriculum Night is to provide an opportunity for parents and students to review, explore, and discuss information with teachers and counselors about course choices for the upcoming school year.

Don Young's Anti Smoking Presentation

Don Young from Young Choices,Inc. came to Truman to show 6th graders the possible consequences of smoking and using tobacco products.  Mr. Young is a throat caner survivor.  In some of the photos you'll notice the students are looking away or covering their eyes, not because they are being rude but because the photos of people who had used tobacco were very disturbing.  Hopefully it will impact the students to stay away from smoking.

Flyer Time Fundraising

Mrs. Whittington's flyer time class raised money in their class by selling hot chocolate before school.  $181.20 was raised and is being given to The American Red Cross to help with disaster relief.  Students helped by providing supplies and serving the hot chocolate as well as setting and cleaning up.  The wonderful cafeteria staff donated a large pot and cart and preheated the water for the drinks each morning. They also donated some cups for the hot chocolate.  The Truman students were happy to give a dollar the the hot chocolate topped with marshmallows or whipped cream.  A big thank you to all who took part in the fundraiser!
