Interact Club Sponsors Can Good Drive

Truman and Sperreng are holding a friendly competition to see who can collect the most canned goods.  Truman students were given an additional incentive to bring in non-perishable goods by allowing anyone who brought in an item to wear a hat throughout the day.  All items collected will benefit local families in need.

Telling Time in German

Students learn in a variety of ways.  They can search the web, read books, do experiments and have hands on learning.  Or in the case of Frau Jacob's German class they can learn by acting it out.  Here the students have become the hour and minute hands of a clock.  Frau Jacob called out a time in German and the students positioned themselves as if they were the hands on the clock.
Can you tell what time it is?

Where's my Chair?

Ms. Frank's math classes have turned in their chairs and are using balls in their place.  She read that using the balls as chairs helped students stay focused.  It also helps students use energy (to stay on the ball) and posture.  So she got funding through DonorsChoose.org and received enough to purchase a set of stability balls for her class. I asked students how they liked the new "furniture" and they all said they really liked the balls.  One student said it helped her stay focused on her work.

Kickball

Mrs. Hake and Ms. Frank are the sponsors of intramural sports at Truman. Kickball is being played now and students seem to enjoy themselves. The games are played like neighborhood games have been played in the past. There are no referees, instead if there is a close call they do "rock, paper, scissors" to decide if they are safe or out.

Truman Cares

Truman raised over $2000 for the Gapsch family.  Students who donated at least $1.00 were able to wear a hat for the day.  The Gapsch family lost 3 members of their family in a house fire.  Mia Gapsch, a student at Sperreng was the only one to survive the fire.  More fundraisers are being planned throughout the district.

Last Day Field Day

The last day of school was an example of what Flyer Time classes were all about.  Students spent the day as a whole community in special events set up by the school's character culture club.
Click here to view these pictures larger
At the end of the day everyone met in the gym for a pep rally type event.  Dr. Sparks, Mr. Straatmann and Mrs. Pulliam gave an example of a spirit cheer.

Flyer Time classes spent the day in groups of 4 classes each.  At the end of the day they were told to break up into their individual classes and come up with a spirit cheer.  They had 10 minutes to create and practice their cheer and then gave a demonstration to their small group.  The winner of each small group performed for the student body and then 1 was selected as the winner for the Truman #1 Finger Award.

Mrs. Nussbaum's class was the winning group.  They invited the rest of their larger group to perform with them. That is what the whole community school idea is all about.

HAVE A FUN, SAFE SUMMER!
SEE YOU IN AUGUST!

Mrs. Badino's Weather Unit

Mrs. Badino's students have just completed a weather webquest in which they collected weather data, analyzed the data, learned about various aspects of weather, and learned how to forecast the weather.  Besides participating in in-class mini-lessons and demonstrations, students were responsible for some of their own learning by moving through the webquest   They used a number of resources to access information.  Although this was a new method of learning for many of them, they learned a lot as evidenced in assessments and forecasting.  They now spend a few minutes each day forecasting the day's weather and comparing their forecasts to those of local meteorologists.  They are excited that their forecasts are just as accurate!

Here is the link to the webquest.
